Ice Crystals and Evolution

 Another common argument used by evolutionist in an attempt to circumvent the second law is the formation of ice crystals. The argument mostly centers on the facts that ice crystals are ordered and therefore greater order can happen in an open system.

The problem with this argument is that ice crystals may have a lot of order, but they contain no specified complexity and represent and increase in entropy (loss of useful energy for doing work). Life requires specified complexity. An ice crystal is at a a lower energy level than the liquid water. As water cools to freezing (crystallization), the velocity of the water molecules slows allowing molecular bonds to form between them. This event always occurs due to the bonding nature of the water molecules.

The order in an ice crystal structure compared to specified complexity in life can be illustrated by using two books of five hundred pages. The book representing the ice crystal would contain five hundred pages. The book representing the ice crystal would contain five hundred pages of repeating signals of ABABABABAB. This book carries no information: only "AB"-a set of repeated patterns. The book representing life would contains specified complexity in the form of information. The book representing the ice crystal contains order nut no information.

Simple order and complexity such as found in a snowflake, is exceedingly trivial when compared to the increase in information, organization and specified complexity that would be required for either spontaneous generation of life (chemical evolution) or any intermediate step of descent assumed by macro evolutionists.

The formation of molecules or atoms into geometric patterns such snowflakes or crystals includes movement toward a lower energy level, the opposite needed for life.

Thermodynamics and Ice Crystals

When ice freezes it releases heat energy into the environment. This causes an entropy increase in the ice (loss of heat energy). But the formation of proteins and nucleic acids (DNA) from amino acids and nucleotides requires energy to be added from the surroundings. This means the surroundings increase in entropy (loose heat energy), but the protein and nucleic acid decreases in entropy (gain in complexity). This is just the opposite of an ice crystal. A crystal forms because this regular arrangement (repeated pattern) through molecular bonding has a lower energy level (molecule movement is slower). This means that heat is lost into the surroundings; therefore the overall entropy of the ice crystal is increased.

Counter Attack:

Statement by evolutionist:

"If the Second Law truly prohibited local emergence of increased order, there would be no ice cubes. The greater orderliness of water molecules in ice crystals than in the liquid state is purchased with the expenditure of energy at the generator that made the electricity to run the freezer. And that makes it legal under the Second Law."

Response by creationist:

This is an excellent example of how not to think scientifically. The freezer is not a random event but a result of intelligent design. The quote is illogical at best. The order in crystals is not the same as specified complexity that is required in life. An energy source is not enough to produce the specified complexity of life. The energy must be directed in some ways.

Crystallization always represents an overall increase in entropy.
