Mount Carmel is a range of hills about 15 miles long, along the southern boundary of the bay of Acre. It is the southwestern boundary of the Valley of Esdraelon, through which the brook Kishon runs. Now called Jabel Kurmel, it was once the southern boundary of Asher's inheritance.
Elijah had a decisive showdown with the disciples of Baal here calling down fire from heaven. From here Elijah's servant saw the little cloud rising that signaled the end of the long drought. Elisha visited here (2 Kings 2:25;4:25) with great results.
Mount Carmel is a long-time fruitful area (Isaiah 33:9, 35:2, Jeremiah 1:19 and Micah 7:14). Its fabled beauty is celebrated in Song of Solomon 7:5, "Thine head upon thee is like Carmel." And yet another of Israel's prophets, in Amos 1:2, prophesies, "The top of Carmel shall wither."
Some ancient caves, described as being from the Paleolithic period, were discovered with human remains inside. The remains have been known as Mount Carmel man.
Mount Carmel is not the city Carmel, which is located by Hebron, where David found his wife, Abigail.
