The Persians captured Jerusalem in 614 A.D. Throughout Palestine virtually every church was destroyed. Only in Bethlehem was the church spared because they saw a mosaic of the adoration of the Magi (Wise Men) in which the Magi were dressed in Persian clothes. With the coming of the Persians the control of Jerusalem passed back to the Jews, but only for three years, when the Persians returned control of it to the Christian majority. It would be only be temporary, for Persian control lasted only fifteen years before the Byzantines recaptured Palestine (Israel).
