Sex and your body

📖 1 Corinthians 6:18–20 (ESV)

“Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.”

✝️ Reflection & Explanation

This passage from Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians is a powerful call to live in purity and reverence, especially in how we treat our bodies. Here are the main themes:

1. “Flee from sexual immorality”

Paul doesn’t say to "fight" or "resist" sexual immorality—he says to flee. This shows the seriousness and danger of it. Sexual sin is not something to negotiate with; it’s something to escape from. In the ancient city of Corinth, sexual immorality was normalized and even tied to religious practices. Paul calls believers to a radically different standard.

2. “The sexually immoral person sins against his own body”

Unlike many other sins that primarily affect others, sexual sin deeply damages the person committing it—emotionally, spiritually, even physically. It violates the sacredness of the body in a uniquely intimate way.

3. “Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit”

This is a transformative truth. If you are a believer, your body is not just yours—it’s where God Himself dwells. That means your physical life matters. How you use your body reflects your relationship with God.

4. “You are not your own… you were bought with a price”

This reminds us of the sacrifice of Jesus. The "price" is His blood, His suffering, His life given for ours. Because of that, our lives—including our bodies—belong to Him. We're stewards, not owners.

5. “So glorify God in your body”

This wraps up the thought: since your body belongs to God and houses His Spirit, honor Him with it. Purity isn’t just about avoiding sin—it’s about worshiping God with every part of yourself.

🙏 Application

  • Ask: Am I treating my body as a temple of the Holy Spirit?

  • Reflect: Are there areas of my life where I need to flee instead of flirt with temptation?

  • Remember: You are deeply valued—God paid for you with His Son.

The history of Mount Carmel

Mount Carmel is a range of hills about 15 miles long, along the southern boundary of the bay of Acre. It is the southwestern boundary of the Valley of Esdraelon, through which the brook Kishon runs. Now called Jabel Kurmel, it was once the southern boundary of Asher's inheritance.

Elijah had a decisive showdown with the disciples of Baal here calling down fire from heaven. From here Elijah's servant saw the little cloud rising that signaled the end of the long drought. Elisha visited here (2 Kings 2:25;4:25) with great results.

Mount Carmel is a long-time fruitful area (Isaiah 33:9, 35:2, Jeremiah 1:19 and Micah 7:14). Its fabled beauty is celebrated in Song of Solomon 7:5, "Thine head upon thee is like Carmel." And yet another of Israel's prophets, in Amos 1:2, prophesies, "The top of Carmel shall wither."

Some ancient caves, described as being from the Paleolithic period, were discovered with human remains inside. The remains have been known as Mount Carmel man.

Mount Carmel is not the city Carmel, which is located by Hebron, where David found his wife, Abigail.
