No one gets out of this world alive—so without question, this is the most important question you will ever ask yourself: Where will I spend eternity?
The Bible addresses this directly. In 1 John 5:13, we are told that we can know for sure that we have eternal life. But how?
1. Recognize Your Need
First, we must realize that we are sinners. If we don’t acknowledge our sin, we won’t see our need for a Savior. The Bible is clear about this:
“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” – Romans 3:23
No one is exempt. Sin separates us from God, and only by recognizing our brokenness can we begin the journey to salvation.
2. Repent and Turn to Jesus
Next, the Bible calls us to repent. Repentance isn’t just about feeling sorry—it’s about a change of direction. It means turning away from sin and turning toward Jesus Christ. It’s a change of heart, mind, and will.
“Repent and believe the good news!” – Mark 1:15
This doesn’t mean we’ll be perfect, but it does mean we’re willing to follow Jesus and let Him lead our lives.
3. Receive Jesus Christ by Faith
True belief is more than just knowledge or agreement—it means trust. Even the devil knows who Jesus is and believes the facts about Him, but he does not trust in Him (see James 2:19).
To receive Christ is to personally trust in Him alone—for this life and for eternity—as both Savior and Lord. Eternal life isn’t something we earn; it’s something Jesus already purchased through His death and resurrection.
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.” – Ephesians 2:8
When we trust in Christ, He exchanges His perfection for our sin. That’s the heart of the gospel.
4. Be Born Again
According to Jesus, those who realize their need, repent of their sins, and receive Him by faith are born again—not physically, but spiritually.
“Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” – John 3:3
Being born again is a spiritual transformation that brings new life—a life connected to God now and forever.
5. Rest in the Promise of Eternal Life
Salvation is not based on emotions or feelings but on the promises of Jesus Christ. We can trust Him to keep His Word.
“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment but has passed from death to life.” – John 5:24
This is the assurance every heart longs for: the confidence that, in Christ, we have passed from death into life—and that we never need to fear death or hell.
