How should we vote?

Every election cycle, people love to debate where God fits into American politics. Is He a Democrat? Is He a Republican?
The truth is, God doesn't fit neatly into any human political party. He isn't sitting on a donkey or an elephant. However, that doesn't mean His principles are a mystery. Scripture gives us clear guidance on how we are meant to live, view humanity, and structure society.
When we look at governance through a biblical lens, it isn't about aligning with a party platform—it's about aligning with God's word. If a policy or ideology stands against these core biblical principles, it isn't just opposing a political opponent; it stands in opposition to God's ultimate authority.
Here are five foundational principles clearly laid out in Scripture that define God's design for society:
1. Value for Life
Human life carries innate dignity and purpose because humanity was created directly in the image of God. From the very beginning, Scripture establishes that life is intentional, sacred, and worth protecting at every stage.
Key Reference: Genesis 1:27 highlights that God created mankind in His own image.
2. Secure Borders and Sovereignty
Nations and boundaries serve a functional purpose in maintaining peace, security, and orderly society. The biblical narrative frequently emphasizes the importance of establishing protection and walling off community space to prevent dishonor and destruction.
Key Reference: Nehemiah 2 speaks to the necessity of rebuilding Jerusalem's walls to protect the community and restore its dignity.
3. Law, Order, and Justice
Governing authority is established to uphold justice, protect the innocent, and punish wrongdoing. A stable society requires respect for civil authority and a functional justice system that holds lawbreakers accountable.
Key Reference: Romans 13:4 teaches that earthly rulers are meant to serve as ministers of God for good, bearing the responsibility to deter wrongdoers.
4. God’s Design for Gender and Humanity
God created humanity intentionally with distinct, complementary biological identities: male and female. Recognizing this design is central to understanding human nature, family structure, and community foundational design.
Key Reference: Genesis 1:27 notes that God explicitly created mankind male and female.
5. Standing with Israel
Throughout Scripture, God makes a lasting covenant regarding the nation and people of Israel. His promise to bless those who bless Israel and hold accountable those who curse them remains a foundational pillar of His interaction with nations.
Key Reference: Genesis 12:3 outlines God's promise to Abraham regarding those who support or oppose his descendants.
Final Thought
Politics will always try to divide us into standard earthly categories, but as believers, our ultimate allegiance isn't to a political party's logo—it's to God's truth. When evaluating policy, governance, and leadership, our first question shouldn't be "Is this Republican or Democrat?" but rather "Does this align with the Word of God?"
