The water and the flood

Consider the power of water and how long it takes to create a large flood. In 1998, during one of the hurricanes off the coast of Carolina. It rained for thirty hours. During this one day period the water reached the second story in many buildings.

The book of Genesis does not describe a flood that operated for one day. The Bible teaches that the floodgates of heaven were opened and the fountains of the deep burst forth. It rained for forty days and forty nights.

Genesis 7:11-12

11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, on the seventeenth day of the second month—on that day all the springs of the great deep burst forth, and the floodgates of the heavens were opened. 12 And rain fell on the earth forty days and forty nights.

The waters lifted the Ark, which was four hundred fifty feet long and all the high mountains were covered by twenty feet of water. In addition, all land breathing creatures, except those on the Ark perished. This does not sound like the description of a local flood.

Genesis 7:19-21

19 They rose greatly on the earth, and all the high mountains under the entire heavens were covered. 20 The waters rose and covered the mountains to a depth of more than fifteen cubits. 21 Every living thing that moved on land perished—birds, livestock, wild animals, all the creatures that swarm over the earth, and all mankind.
