The suffererings and Death of Jesus, part one

The Sufferings and Death of Jesus

29) Prophecy: Satan shall bruise Jesus' "heel" by having him suffer and die
Old Testament Reference: Genesis 3:15
New Testament Fulfillment: John 19:18; John 12:31-33

Genesis 3:15
15 And I will put enmity
    between you and the woman,
    and between your offspring and hers;
he will crush your head,
    and you will strike his heel.”

John 19:18
18 Here they crucified him, and with him two others—one on each side and Jesus in the middle.

John 12:31-33
 31 Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out. 32 But I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to myself.” 33 He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die.

30) Prophecy: Jesus would be tortured
Old Testament Reference: Isaiah 50:6
New Testament Fulfillment: Matthew 27:26; Mark 15:15

 Isaiah 50:6
6 I offered my back to those who beat me,
    my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard;
I did not hide my face
    from mocking and spitting.

Matthew 27:26
26 Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.

Mark 15:15
15 Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.

31) Prophecy: The body of Jesus would bear the marks of abuse and torture
Old Testament Reference: Psalm 22:16-17, Isaiah 52:14
New Testament Fulfillment: Matthew 27:26, 29-30; John 19:1-3

 Psalm 22:16-17
 16 Dogs have surrounded me;
    a band of evil men has encircled me,
    they have pierced my hands and my feet.
17 I can count all my bones;
    people stare and gloat over me.

 Isaiah 52:14
 14 Just as there were many who were appalled at him—
    his appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any man
    and his form marred beyond human likeness—

 Matthew 27:26
 26 Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.

  Matthew 27:29-30
 29 and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand and knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said. 30 They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again.

 John 19:1-3
1 Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe and went up to him again and again, saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!” And they struck him in the face.

32) Prophecy: Jesus would suffer and die for the sins for the world
Old Testament Reference: Isaiah 53:4-6, 10-11
New Testament Fulfillment: Romans 5:6-8

 Isaiah 53:4-6
 Surely he took up our infirmities
    and carried our sorrows,
yet we considered him stricken by God,
    smitten by him, and afflicted.
But he was pierced for our transgressions,
    he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was upon him,
    and by his wounds we are healed.
We all, like sheep, have gone astray,
    each of us has turned to his own way;
and the Lord has laid on him
    the iniquity of us all.

 Isaiah 53:10-11
 10 Yet it was the Lord’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer,
    and though the Lord makes  his life a guilt offering,
he will see his offspring and prolong his days,
    and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand.
11 After the suffering of his soul,
    he will see the light of life  and be satisfied;
by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many,
    and he will bear their iniquities.

 Romans 5:6-8
 You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

33) Prophecy: Jesus would receive reproach, dishonor and have his enemies before him

Old Testament Reference: Psalm 69:9, 19-20
New Testament Fulfillment: Matthew 26:55, 65-66, 27:27-30

Psalm 69:9
The Lord has heard my cry for mercy;
    the Lord accepts my prayer.

 Psalm 69:19-20
 19 You know how I am scorned, disgraced and shamed;
    all my enemies are before you.
20 Scorn has broken my heart
    and has left me helpless;
I looked for sympathy, but there was none,
    for comforters, but I found none.

 Matthew 26:55
 55 At that time Jesus said to the crowd, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching, and you did not arrest me.

 Matthew 26:65-66
 65 Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, “He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. 66 What do you think?”
“He is worthy of death,” they answered.

 Matthew 27:27-30
 27 Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him. 28 They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, 29 and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand and knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said. 30 They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again.
